Psalm 120 — By faith for trust & peace

A Song of Ascents.

1 In my distress I cried unto the LORD,
And he answered me.
2 Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips,
And from a deceitful tongue.
3 What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,
Thou deceitful tongue?
4 Sharp arrows of the mighty,
With coals of juniper.
5 Woe is me,
That I sojourn in Meshech,
That I dwell among the tents of Kedar!
6 My soul hath long had her dwelling
With him that hateth peace.
7 I am for peace:
But when I speak, they are for war.

The first time I recorded a podcast for this psalm I knew what lies were and how they hurt people. Today, four years later, I know more about the destruction left behind lying and the hurt it makes in other people. I also know more of the beauty and health found in godly truth. The psalm didn't change, but it watched me change.

My understanding of the psalms, and all of God's word, grows the more I read and contemplate my readings. As we travel through our days we see and experience more of this world. As we return to God's word we better understand both God's holiness and the dissatisfaction of the world we see. I believe this is the grace of God; he purifies our sight with better understanding.

This is why we continue with God's word day in and day out. As we live and grow, our appreciation for the word grows. Slowly but surely, our dependence on God and his word grows, too. This is at the heart of faith and faithfulness. By this faith we confidently cry out to the Lord, knowing he did answer before and will answer again, today.

Let us then, by God's word, live for truth & peace among those who, in lying and hatred, toss God's word recklessly behind their back. Let us praise God.
