Psalm 121 — Rest Assured

A Song of Ascents.

1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains:
From whence shall my help come?
2 My help cometh from the LORD,
Which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
He that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel
Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is thy keeper:
The LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall keep thee from all evil;
He shall keep thy soul.
8 The LORD shall keep thy going out and thy coming in,
From this time forth and for evermore.

There is something special about the psalms of ascents. I think every time I reach this portion of the psalms I bring this up. They seem so simple, easy and lovely. I imagine little folk melodies connected to their words. I even picture mothers singing lines like these to their children.

God is the one with help. To him alone do we look and seek for the peace that preserves Lord does not slumber; he is not slack, as some count slackness. No, he is ready and available to shield you from the searing sun - even the myriad of moonlit horrors that plague our dreams.

When we sing about God's good help - to our children or to ourselves - we express gratitude to our good God. Let these psalms enter your heart and feed your faith. Going out each morning, God is with you. Returning home to rest, God is there. Praise God.
